Our business was established in 2003 by Jonathan Heinamann. Currently based in Cape Town, we have satellite offices in Johannesburg and London.
Athena Capital has grown from the foundations of a successful boutique corporate finance house to become an established private equity firm with a track record of investing in growing businesses across the region.
Athena Capital is currently the exclusive investment advisor to an Investment Holding Company. We provide private equity investment advisory services to the company through identifying potential investment opportunities, performing due diligence investigations, advising on potential acquisitions or follow-on investments for portfolio companies, on-going monitoring and management of portfolio companies, and advising on disposals.
We are personally invested in Sub-Saharan Africa and our team has successfully run some of the largest companies in the region. Collectively, we have built a substantial network of trusted relationships, providing a secure source of investment opportunities, access to local knowledge and expertise, and localized risk management capabilities.

We take a patient and considered approach to investing in early-stage, mid-market or strategic businesses in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), business services and inclusive tech-enabled financial services sectors across Sub-Saharan Africa. We focus our investments on South African intellectual property, management teams or companies who are seeking expansion capital for growth both in South Africa and north of our borders, or who benefit from key customers expanding into new territories.
