ED Programme helps SMEs move into top gear
IF small businesses are the ‘engines’ of our local economy, then the Business Chamber’s Enterprise Development Programme is the fuel that accelerates the optimal performance of small businesses based in Nelson Mandela Bay.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber Enterprise Development Programme was first launched in 2014, with an aim to develop the skills that enhance and grow small businesses in the city. The programme has been so successful that by the end of this year, over 100 SMEs (small to medium-sized enterprises) would have benefited from taking part in the four different phases of the programme.
SMEs typically employ fewer than 50 people, but are recognised as the engines of growth for the economy of South Africa, with the potential to grow into new markets and create much needed opportunities for employment.
The Third Phase of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber Enterprise Development Programme was launched in November last year. Over 20 business owners were rigorously selected as the prestigious participants of the programme. The Third Phase participants will graduate in April, with the Fourth Phase of the Enterprise Development Programme set to commence in June.
Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber Operations manager Prince Matonsi explains: “It is envisaged that after all the stages have been fulfilled, the SME, will get an opportunity to interface with other Enterprise Development support structures such as incubators, accelerators and funders, to enhance that sustainability. This will provide the icing on the cake.”
