Our Purpose

The Lions Den has launched the Black Entrepreneur Movement, our purpose being to create, coach and inspire 100 000 black entrepreneurs in the next 12 months in building sustainable businesses which are both profitable & remarkable and to live better & more fulfilling lives.

The issues facing Black Entrepreneurs including information from the Global Entrepreneurial Index is:

The lack of the basics; electricity, water, roads, working spaces etc especially in townships
The environment in which previous inequalities still hinder growth & access to networks
The lack of business literacy and education in entrepreneurship
The lack of physical infrastructure like business hubs
The exorbitantly high cost of living
The lack of intent to start a business amongst the working age
The threat of automation, artificial intelligence and robotics on jobs and
The lack of access to funding and finance

Why the Black Entrepreneur Movement?

Black Entrepreneurs have been marginalised in the past and have therefore been at a disadvantage with the black unemployment rate exceeding that of any other race, with black women being the most vulnerable with over 30% unemployed.

What is the Black Entrepreneur Movement?

The movement is all about creating a platform for black entrepreneurs or would-be entrepreneurs to access information and education around entrepreneurship so as to increase the intent in starting a new business. Who are we?

The Black Entrepreneur Movement is powered and run by The Lions Den; an entrepreneurial company involved in numerous businesses and initiatives around coaching, training, supporting and creating entrepreneurs. Our team’s mixed skilled set and entrepreneurial spirit position us perfectly to assist others in their entrepreneurial journey.

The Lions Den also runs Scooler | The School Entrepreneur Movement – www.scooler.co.za whose purpose is to create and inspire an entrepreneurial spirit in our schools so that our students can shape their own futures by exploring an alternative to tertiary education and The Lady Lion | The Women Entrepreneur Movement – www.theladylion.co.za whose purpose is to inspire women entrepreneurs to challenge the status quo, compete on an equal footing and lead the way to alleviating unemployment in South Africa.

The brainchild of our CEO Leon Lategan, previously CEO of Independent Newspapers digital division IOL and CEO & Founder of one of South Africa’s top digital agencies, Purple Cow which he sold in 2012 to Yellow Pages.

Being a university drop-out and now a successful Serial Entrepreneur, International Speaker and a Coach & Creator of Entrepreneurs, he fully knows what it means to find yourself with no degree and looking for a job and ultimately choosing the path of entrepreneurship and LOVING IT!

The Lions Den is also partnered with Teen Entrepreneur who is on a mission to assist our youth entrepreneurs by running entrepreneurial societies in our schools.
