Description: The Green Fund’s role is that of a catalyst in the transition towards a green economy. The Fund will thus provide appropriate financial and other support to various entities engaged in green economic activities from early stage research and development right through to the project expansion phase. About The Green Fund

The Green Fund is a unique, newly established national fund that seeks to support green initiatives to assist South Africa’s transition to a low carbon, resource efficient and climate resilient development path delivering high impact economic, environmental and social benefits.

The Green Fund’s role is that of a catalyst in the transition towards a green economy, as such it seeks to unlock barriers and bridge gaps, wherever they exist along the innovation value chain. The Fund will thus provide appropriate financial and other support to various entities engaged in green economic activities from early stage research and development right through to the project expansion phase. Financial support is provided through a holistic investment assessment, due diligence, and investment decision making process.

The Fund is managed by the Development of Bank of South Africa (DBSA) on behalf of Department of Environmental Affairs.

Programme Purpose

The Fund will respond to market weaknesses currently hampering South Africa’s transition to a green economy by:

1. Promoting innovative and high impact green programmes and projects

2. Reinforcing climate policy objectives through green interventions

3. Building an evidence base for the expansion of the green economy, and

4. Attracting additional resources to support South Africa’s green economy development.

Financial support may take the form of:

Grants (recoverable and non-recoverable)
Loans (concessional rates and terms)
Equity

Sector and Geographic Focus:

The funds are limited to projects in South Africa, SADC Region and select countries in teh greater continent of Africa.

Project is within the priority sectors considered by the Green Fund and specifically the following thematic areas:

- Anaerobic digestion from organic waste
- Sludge from Waste Waster Treatment Plants
- Material Recovery Facilities
